The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious leadership award challenges girls to change the world—or at least their corner of it. By the time she puts the final touches on her seven-step project, she'll have solved a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future. The Gold Award Take Action Project addresses a root issue that a girl is interested in, has national and/or global ties and is sustainable. Guidelines suggest a minimum of 80 hours be spent on the project.
Roy L. Selby, Jr., of Beallsville, MD, owner of Selby's Market, was a huge supporter of Girl Scouts. Every cookie season you could see girls selling cookies outside the market until the store closed in January 2012. Mr. Selby was also extremely generous in supplying groceries and other items to the area Girl Scouts for various Girl Scout events. After a long battle with cancer, Mr. Selby died September 14, 2013. Mr. Selby's obituary can be found here.
The Roy L. Selby, Jr., Scholarship fund is sustained with the support of family, friends, neighbors and the Poolesville area community. Should you wish to support our future leaders, please make your check out to "Service Unit 32-11" and reference the scholarship on the memo line.
